The Mounts series seem restricted to a specific subject matter, but these paintings are actually products of a very elastic framework. The Mounts initially read as a quirky group of ridiculous structures. They suggest some archeological mystery. These are earthworks of unknown origin, and of unknown, but undeniable purpose. They may be monuments, they may be poignant memorials. They may be of human or alien or supernatural creation, but they strongly demonstrate the presence of sentiency within a corporeal world.
The Mounts also serve as a metaphor for the very act of painting. They exist as a painted depiction of a fictitious reality, but the theme also facilitates the of-the-moment construction of a painted reality. As I "build" these mounds in paint, the Mounts memorialize the exploratory process of painting.
